Meet Anthony: Wood Sculptor

ANTHONY SANTELLA, Ph.D., is a sculptor and a Senior Research Scientist at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. His academic research encompasses topics in image analysis, graphics, and computational biology. His studio work focuses on exploring world traditions of ritual woodcarving in reclaimed wood. For him, creating finely detailed figures from discarded materials is both an environmental statement and an act of resurrection. He is a core team member of the Openings Artist Collective, a project of the Paulist Fathers. He has exhibited widely, and his work is in the permanent collection of the Puffin Foundation as well as numerous private collections. His artistic and curatorial work has been featured in The Village Voice, Design NJ, The Bergen Record, and the book Addiction and Art from John Hopkins University Press. His academic research has appeared in Siggraph, CHI, Nature Methods, and Cell.
