CATHOLIC ARTIST CONNECTION: Where are you from originally, and what brought you to your current city?
LESLIE DARLING: I am originally from the Midwest and met a Canadian at the University of Alabama and moved to Canada after we were married.
How do understand your vocation as a Catholic artist?
It took me a long time to call myself an artist as I have had no formal schooling in the arts other than high school. I did not do art for many years after university until my conversion to the Catholic faith. I know my art is a gift from God and so desire to use it for His glory. I am passionate about the importance of beauty in our world today, and I am dedicated to bringing more beauty into the liturgy, Catholic devotions, and the world.
Where have you found support among your fellow artists for your Catholic faith?
I have had the support of family and friends who have encouraged me in continuing my art. I was part of a Christian artist community but it did not seem supportive of Catholic art. Your email showed up in my inbox one day and I was very happy to see what you do.
Where in your city do you regularly find spiritual fulfillment?
I attend St. Lawrence O’Toole Parish in a small country village. It is where I was received into the church in 2001. It is a beautiful stone church with a vibrant community. I enjoy our weekly Bible study, which is fun and informative.
What is your daily spiritual practice?
I attend daily Mass as often as I can as well as adoration when it is offered. I have a spiritual director who offered to direct me when I went to confession to him while at a women's retreat. I do attend a yearly women’s fall retreat in my area.
