Pennsylvania Pieta

By Ethan Hayes (project lead, chief artist and designer)

Artist Statement

This historical piece has been restored with help from many artists. Likely over 100 years old it has seen multiple restorations by artists over its lifetime, originally made in Chicago. When its original church closed decades ago in rural Ohio it was rescued from destruction and preserved for many years in a Pennsylvania barn. Finally finding a proper team to restore this piece to its original glory, its custodians have arranged for it to enter the permanent care of a rapidly growing order of religious sisters in southeast Michigan. This piece represents the talents, hopes and prayers of many as it has seen the growth and death of marginalized Rust Belt Catholic communities now looking forward to a new vibrant future for the Church.
