Make/Believe

By Serafina Blake

Artist Statement

“Make/Believe” explores the possibility of re-imagining the Trinity through womanhood and femininity. Blurring the boundaries between fantasy and reality, butterfly wings allow the women in motion to take flight under water. Equal parts power and strength, grace and elegance, their bodies in motion inspire a reflection on womanhood which reveals the potential to imagine God through the lens of the feminine, rather than solely through the masculine.

“Make/Believe” is comprised of multiple kinds of ocean backgrounds, highlighting both the beauty and mystery of the ocean, and also the freedom of being able to move, swim, and even fly, in vast and diverse waters. How can we expand our imagination to see God through the lens of play, awe, wonder, and fantasy? And in what ways are we constantly creating our image of God without even recognizing it? By exploring the boundaries between our imagination and our reality, “Make/Believe” highlights that both our creativity and our spirituality can transcend such fixed limits or barriers, and inspire new possibilities for an authentic relationship with the Divine.
