Blowing the Dynamite of the Church

By Maria Bergh

Artist Statement

The Catholic Worker is a lay ecclesial movement that operates on principles similar to the synod, offering hospitality, meaningful direct action, and clarification of thought on social justice issues. This short zine aims to stimulate conversation and consideration of how the church fosters social change systemically and individually through the presentation of the history of the Catholic Worker movement superimposed over two traditional CW texts -- an easy essay or political prose poem by Peter Maurin called "Blowing the Dynamite of the Church" and the "Aims and Means" (similar to a mission statement) drafted by the NYCW community. The total is envisioned as a primer in thinking critically on how synodal processes in faith communities can change our social context over time.
